On Saturday, June 2, 2018, Erwin Marine was excited to host the FIRST Surf Competition in Chattanooga!
Sponsored by HeyDay and Phase 5, the competition was a huge success with competitors from all over Chattanooga and surrounding areas.
The event was held on a beautiful, busy Saturday on Chickamauga Lake. We started with a kids’ competition. They had a blast and wow, these kids can shred it! We have amazing talent here in Chattanooga!
First place of the Youth Division went to this awesome surfer girl, Kate Rogers. Here she is with her brand new Phase 5 surfboard! Congratulations, Kate!
The HeyDay WT-Surf was busy all day with beginner and intermediate surfers. Some of them made it look so easy and effortless. Even the wipe-outs looked like fun!
Did we mention this is the FIRST surf competition in Chattanooga?
Our driver, Ben Dorton of HeyDay, did a killer job through the heat of the day and the sometimes crazy traffic in the lake. And we couldn’t have asked for a better team of judges than Keisha Bentley of HeyDay and Drew Danielo of Phase 5. They had a really tough job. In fact, they really had to put their heads together to chose the winners.
In the “Beginners” Division, First Place went to Robert Kirby.
The First Place Winner of the “Intermediate” Division was Kevin Cook.
At the end of the day, win or lose, new friends were made, everyone had big smiles on their faces, and had a little fun on the water. All-in-all, the day was a big success!
If you missed the competition this year, don’t worry. We are already working on next year’s event! If you want to be sure not to miss out on it, keep up to date by filling out the form here.
We would like to offer a huge “Thank You” to all who made this event happen, especially Keisha Bentley and Benjamin Dorton of HeyDay, Drew Danielo of Phase 5, Michael Porter and Bryan Summers of Erwin Marine. And thank you to all of the competitors and spectators for showing up and being patient with us for our first run of this surf competition. We had fun and we hope you did too. Next year will be even better and we welcome your suggestions to make it so. Thank you!

The Chattanooga Sail and Power Squadron (CSPS) will be teaching the United States Power Squadron America’s Boating Course on Saturday, Apil 7, 2018, and again on Sunday, April 15, 2018. The cost is $40.
America’s Boating Course includes:
types of boats and their uses
boating laws, both federal and state
safety equipment, both required and recommended
finding your way, and adverse conditions
trailering, knots and lines, and water sports topics
The class includes a final examination that satisfies the TWRA Boating Safety Class requirements. If you need a TWRA issued boating safety education card, you must purchase a $10 boat safety Type 600 Exam Permit from any business (licensed agent) that sells hunting and fishing licenses (Wal-Mart, Academy Sports, bait stores, marinas, etc.). The receipt from this transaction is your “ticket” to take the exam, and you must bring the exam “ticket” to the examination administrator (required only if you want to obtain a TWRA boating safety education card). The exam permit fee is in addition to the class fee. The permit will not be available for purchase at the class site.
THE LAW– Tennessee residents born after January 1, 1989, must have in their possession, a TWRA issued boating safety education card showing proof of successful completion of the TWRA administered boating safety exam if operating a boat or personal watercraft alone. Non-Tennessee residents, born after January 1, 1989, must show a certificate from any course approved by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA).
